Better Call Saul is a crime and legal drama series created by Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould. This is a spin-off, prequel, and sequel to Gilligan's previous show, Breaking Bad. Saul Goodman is an egocentric criminal defence lawyer who is primarily set in the early to mid 2000s in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
As Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) tries to become a respectable lawyer, Better Call Saul follows him as he transforms into a flamboyant criminal lawyer, Saul Goodman, the character grew up about six years before Breaking Bad, from 2002 to 2008.
His older brother Chuck inspires Jimmy to leave his past as a Chicago conman. At Hamlin, Hamlin & McGill (HHM), his brother's Albuquerque law firm, he worked in the mail-room where Howard Hamlin became his nemesis. As a mailroom employee at HHM, Jimmy befriends Kim Wexler, who goes to law school and becomes one of the firm's associates, and their friendship turns romantic. Jimmy is motivated by Chuck's success to finish college and get a law degree through a fictitious University of American Samoa.
He worked as a public defender after gaining admission to the bar but wasn't hired by HHM. He later starts practising elder law, which leads to a lawsuit against a nursing home chain he discovers is defrauding its clients. As Jimmy and Chuck work on a class-action lawsuit, Chuck passes it to HHM, squeezing Jimmy out. As a result of Chuck's constant belittling, sabotage, and vindictive behaviour towards Jimmy, Jimmy begins to unravel. As Jimmy's life and career intersect with the illegal narcotics trade, characters and story arcs continue to develop.
These arcs include the uneasy truce between the Salamanca family, which serves the Cartel drug trade, led by Hector Salamanca and his nephews Tuco (Raymond Cruz) and Lalo, and Gus Fring, an entrepreneur whose fried chicken restaurants are drug-related. Among those caught in the chaos are Ignacio Nacho; Varga, an associate of Gus who wants to protect his father from harm, and Mike Ehrmantraut, a former Philadelphia cop who helps out. As Jimmy's interactions with criminals continue, he takes on the persona of the flamboyant, colorful Saul Goodman, while his work as an attorney goes from questionable to unethical to illegal.
The show includes flash-forwards to events following Breaking Bad, as well as selected scenes that take place in the Breaking Bad timeline. Scenes from 2010 show Jimmy living under the guise of Gene Takavic, a Cinnabon store manager in Omaha.
