Netflix's latest international acquisition, Bordertown (known in Finland as Sorjornen), is a Nordic Noir focused on Kari Sorjonen (Ville Virtanen), a detective who has seen too many horrors and decides to move his sick wife and teenage daughter to a family house in the relatively tranquil town of Lappeenranta, a town that borders the edges of Finland and Russia. However, shortly after Kari’s arrival, a serial killer starts to haunt his new home and Kari's investigation reveals the killer is linked to his own family. Bordertown balances the ambivalence of murder-of-the-week procedurals and the deep emotional weight of crime dramas like Broadchurch, with Kari's character as the focus. Though a bit predictable with a Sherlock-like detective, Bordertown is a good option for those looking for a new, foreign language crime drama.
