Originally titled Alias Grace, this novel is an adaptation of the grisly double murder that occurred in 1843 in a village sixteen miles from Toronto, in Upper Canada, when two of Thomas Kinnear's servants, James McDermott, age 20, and Grace Marks, age 16, were accused of killing Kinnear as well as Nancy Montgomery, Kinnear's housekeeper and lover.
